I recently inherited the entire back catalog of the Mountain Collective For Independent Artists. The Mountain C.I.A. was a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting art made for community and not commodity, motivated by passion and not profit. Their philosophy is rooted in the ideals of Do-It-Yourself (DIY) punk rock production, which was made “official” by aquiring non-profit status. Over the past few years, the collective members have become involved in other endeavors, and the Mountain label is sadly being laid to rest.
I have been a big supporter of MTN ever since I started collecting vinyl (incidentally, the Half Man 7″ was my first vinyl purchase). They have released a slew of phenomenal records, many of which have been largely overlooked due to lack of promotion, lack of touring, or the recurring curse of bands breaking up immediately following the release of their record. Some of the more successful Mountain releases are now out of print (i.e Saetia, Closure, Republic of Freedom Fighters), but the remainder of the MTN catalog is currently residing in a veritable shit ton of boxes in my apartment/basement.
